The pricing of many products and services is based on very complex tariff structures.  These structures allow providers e.g. to align product volumes and service levels to different customer groups and to distinguish themselves from competitors.  At the same time however, transparency can very soon become a real issue.

VAN DIJK MC assist both public authorities and private market players in attaining a better understanding of how price structures and price levels compare within one country or between countries.

For each exercise, VAN DIJK MC compose a team of sector experts, methodological experts and local data
collectors.  In collaboration with our clients, consumer profiles are determineed and the sensitivity of making changes to the tariff structures and parameters is analysed.

Recent examples include:
  • In the financial sector, VAN DIJK MC have conducted two benchmarking studies for DG SANCO between 2007 and 2009. One dealt with monitoring the impact of the Single European Payment Area (SEPA) and the other comprised the comparison of the prices of bank accounts in the EU27.

  • In the energy sector, a quarterly benchmarking exercise of gas and electricity prices is made for a European private operator.  Based  on a number of detailed residential and business profiles and a list of external factors (e.g. weather conditions), comparisons are made between the energy prices of a sample of European neighbouring countries.
  • In the telecom sector, a comparison of the cost of broadband Internet access was made for all 27 EU Member States as well as some non-EU broadband pioneer countries (Iceland, Japan, Korea, Norway and the USA).  The benchmarking exercise was made twice a year, over a total period of 3 years (2007 - 2009), allowing time comparisons, and takes into account all technological evolutions in the broadband sector.
